ABOUT DEEPANI Canadian born and of Sri Lankan origin, Deepani de Alwis received a versatile international education at Ladies College and the Colombo International School in Sri Lanka and at St. George’s English School in Rome, Italy. At St. George’s School, she was a member of the Chamber Choir and Orchestra as well as a Soprano soloist, giving performances in Rome, Milan, Sarajevo and Belgrade. Deepani obtained her B.A. in Musical Studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD), University of Glasgow under the guidance of Graeme McNaught. She specialised with piano as her major instrument and voice as her second. On completion of her degree, she was awarded the prestigious T G More Scholarship for postgraduate studies and went on to obtain the Postgraduate Diploma in Pianoforte from the RSAMD the following year. Deepani’s numerous qualifications obtained along the way, included: Fellow of the Trinity College of Music London, Licenciate of the Royal Schools of Music London; Licentiate of the Trinity College of Music London and Royal School of Music London Grade VIII in Singing (Finals). |

Deepani has received several awards and prizes, including the Bach Prize for harpsichord, piano and organ, Glasgow; Prize for Tchaikovsky Piano Competition of Sri Lanka. She has also participated in numerous piano competitions and the Wayne Marshall Jazz Workshop. Deepani’s prolific performance experience began in student concerts as a regular soloist and accompanist with chamber groups at the RSAMD and in school performances in Rome and Sri Lanka. Deepani made her Professional Debut in March 1995 as Soloist with the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra, playing Schumann’s popular Piano Concerto. Since then she has given a number of public concerts in Italy: Rome Allerona (Orvietto) and a live concert and interview on RAI Radio Televisione Italiana. Deepani has given concerts in classical/romantic and modern composition. She also enjoys playing modern jazz. Today, Deepani teaches and performs in Toronto Canada. |
